When is an academic degree the best vocational education? Bedouin professionals reflect on their life choices

We test Foster’s enduring assertion that “the best vocational education is an academic degree” by examining a case study of Israeli Bedouin women and men, young professionals who shared with us their personal stories parents taking them out local separate but equal schools moving to the majority schooling system. The narratives we collected enabled follow journey children whose achievements are attributable not institutional initiatives grassroot alternatives where secured own future. outline professional 16 men moved Kibbutz school, mastered language, matriculated, confidently acquired degrees. Their attest professionalization self-fulfillment also awareness context upbringing daily pressures sustain social equilibrium. These fashioned themselves in interstices between identities, developing both hunger participate global marketplace loyalty local. Ending up holding jobs contributed society, refusing perform stereotypically minoritized they achieved kinds lives have reason value. Compelled honor journeys, conclude our corroborates finding degree, as reflected achievement enhanced opportunities for mobility.
